The Comfort Cup - Why Coffee Is A Symbol Of Care During Hard Seasons

13 min read OCT 27, 2026

Quick Answer

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, but this cup is more than a beloved sip, preferred flavor, or pleasant aroma. Beyond these elements, coffee is also a symbol of care, especially in hard seasons of life. A curious concept, no doubt, but it’s true, and here you’ll find a variety of ways that coffee indeed communicates comfort (and care) through difficult times.

  • 5 Ways Coffee Symbolizes Care During Difficult Seasons In Life

    • Warmth
    • Familiarity
    • Calm In Chaos
    • Fuel To Push Forward
    • An Offer Of Connection

“To everything…there is a season…and a time to every purpose under heaven…”

“...a time to be born, a time to die…a time to laugh, a time to weep.”

No matter whether you attribute the above lines to a biblical passage or a hit song by the Byrds, there is a familiarity within these words which connects us all.

Yes, both joy and sadness are inescapable in this life.

And, the fact that we’ve all known these seasons can make us empathetic to the plight of others.

Okay, sure, we may not need empathy in times of joy, but when it comes to sorrow, or those hard times in life that seem as if they could swallow us whole, our need for care grows exponentially.

The thing is, expressing care towards a loved one or friend who’s in such a season can sometimes feel incredibly difficult.

What should I say? What shouldn’t I say?

What can I do?

What’s a simple way to communicate care without interfering?

These are common ponderings when seeking to support someone during a hard life season, but the thing is, sometimes words fail in such times, and this is where, oddly enough, coffee can provide a means of communication, care, and comfort.

I get it, that probably sounds like we’re trying to infuse this cup into a crisis…just because we’re a coffee company.

But, I can assure you, that’s not the case.

It’s actually amazingly odd when you think about it.

Coffee…of all things…routinely, even historically, does indeed seem to communicate care in the hard seasons of life.

But, how?

Why is it that gifts of coffee are said to boost morale for soldiers in times of war?

Or, why is it that coffee, in a thin, ordinary paper cup of all things, handed to a distraught friend or family member as they wrestle with the unknown at the bedside of a loved one in a hospital, can both communicate care and provide a sense of familiarity and calm?

Personally, in the grand scheme of things, this strikes me as both curious and so very comforting - so much so that it just might be worth a bit more explanation…

5 Ways Coffee Symbolizes Care During Difficult Seasons In Life

I’ve heard it said that every person is either entering a storm (difficult time in life), in the midst of a storm, or has recently come out of a storm.

What’s this mean?

Similar to what we spoke of in the introduction above, hard seasons of life are common to us all.

Sure, life is full of amazing experiences and tremendous joys, and these certainly can’t be overstated.

However, what’s also true is that life is not void of pain.

And, in seasons of pain, sorrow, stress, or hardship, there’s a proven means of communication that seems to transcend words - something that speaks care, almost universally.

This symbol of care is none other than coffee, and below you’ll find 5 ways we find coffee to communicate this value.

1- Warmth

Any Big Bang Theory fans here?

Thus far we’ve introduced coffee as a near-universal symbol of care, and sometimes the evidence of such a claim can be seen in something as simple as a sitcom.

When aspects of common commodities, such as warm beverages, are highlighted in a popular sitcom, this tends to speak to the relatability of a claim, and here the claim involves the comforting element of warmth.

In the television series The Big Bang Theory, one of the main characters, Sheldon, commonly suggests an offering of a hot beverage to individuals experiencing discomfort in life for varying reasons (1).

Though in this particular case, the scientific genius must’ve forgotten the wonder that is decaffeinated coffee, as he routinely avoids java due to its energy-boosting qualities save for the occasion of drunkenness, but as his mother routinely reminds him in her guest appearances on the show - when a friend or guest is hurting, we offer them a hot beverage (1).

But, why a hot beverage?

And, moving beyond Sheldon Cooper’s opinion so as to align with the masses, why hot coffee?

During the Civil War, coffee was noted as a significant source of comfort for troops (2).

Many even mentioned their gratefulness for a hot cup during Thanksgiving recollections while away from their loved ones (2).

During this dark part of our country’s history, when our land seemed devastatingly divided, the warmth of a cup of coffee, something many likely take for granted today, was described as a reprieve, a comfort amidst chaos and sorrow (2).

So, what is it about warmth, about coffee, that serves as a balm for the human heart in times of need, distress, and discouragement?

According to research findings from studies conducted by teams at both Yale and the University of Colorado, when a person physically holds a warm cup of coffee, they often feel more open to connection (3).

This has led researchers to believe there is a connection between physical warmth and emotional warmth (4).

Here, there is believed to be a real brain connection between physical and emotional warmth, one which could potentially be linked to the safety, comfort, and warmth felt and known in the womb (3, 4, 5).

Of course, as Big Bang’s Sheldon Cooper, and his mother, affirm, this can be true of a variety of warm beverages.

However, the commonality or familiarity of coffee, even above other hot drinks indeed seems to elevate this cup as a universal symbol of comfort in hard seasons of life.

So, call it warmth, call it comfort…or simply call it coffee…but a piping hot cup has a way of communicating each of these elements without saying a word.

2- Familiarity

Other than the warmth a cup of coffee both provided and communicated to the Civil War troops mentioned in the section above, the familiarity of this cup undoubtedly played a role in the comfort they received from each sip (2).

And, while war times could certainly be classified as extreme when considering hard seasons of life, this comfort found in familiarity is applicable in most any difficulty.

In hard seasons of life, routines are often disrupted, extra stress, worry, and care consumes our minds and hearts, and many times extra tasks or duties fill our plates.
Through these seasons, no matter how short or long, it’s as if time seems to both stand still and rush by at the same time, and in these stretches, small familiarities are especially centering.

The warmth of your hands around a mug, an aroma you’ve recognized throughout many seasons of life, even as far back as childhood, a familiar flavor that highlights within your mind a normal morning, a typical day, a time that wasn’t filled with uncertainty.

Sounds almost like a lesson in mindfulness or being present in the moment, right?

In reality, this is exactly what familiarity does.

It grounds you.

It centers you in times when everything seems amiss.

And, this is what a familiar cup of coffee does in times of difficulty (6, 7).

Each of these senses enter the spotlight with a single sip, and this communicates or reminds your mind and your body of normalcy, safety, routine, and familiarity.

Self-care is a hot topic in today’s time, but do you ever wonder why something as simple as going to a cafe and getting a cup of hot coffee or tea is listed as a form of self-care?

Some link this association between coffee and care for mental/emotional wellbeing with familiarity (8).

You may see this is in a variety of terms or headlines, but at the root of much of the comfort found in such practices is association (8), which, here, is a synonym for familiarity.

The seemingly mundane cup given to you as you wait at a hospital, while traveling for troubling circumstances, or while at a funeral may not overtly scream comfort, but it’s the normalcy of each familiar sip that speaks care to your hurting, worried heart without you even realizing it, a taste, aroma, and feeling so routine, so predictable, so familiar, that comfort and care take place amidst pain.

3- Calm In Chaos

I suppose this could be viewed as a combination of the two elements already discussed (warmth and familiarity), but despite coffee’s caffeinating qualities, this cup has the ability to bring a real sense of calm to our day.

Even if your routine is temporarily ruined, just making your way to the coffee pot, French press, or espresso machine in the morning, preparing a cup, and taking a sip can bring calm to a chaotic heart and mind (10).

Likewise, in the midst of life’s difficulties, taking a moment to stop in a cafe for a cup of coffee or resting in your favorite chair for a few minutes forces you to stop, to take a break, to slow down and sip.

I suppose it’s the slowing down that contributes to the sense of calm felt with these sips, especially in the midst of what feels like chaos.

Just a moment to breathe deeply, a pause to compose yourself, a time to close your eyes, breathe in, and sip something warm, comforting, and familiar.

This, in and of itself, can promote calm in chaos, but there’s a few other things that could be working beneath the surface as well.

For instance:

  • The caffeine component of coffee can block adenosine receptors which then stimulates the release of dopamine, promoting mild feelings of euphoria or pleasantness which can combat the typical heaviness associated with hard seasons of life (9).
  • In chaotic, stressful, or life-altering seasons, our sense of control is often lost, and this can add to the difficulty of any situation. The familiarity component of coffee, as we mentioned above, contributes to the calm that is often felt when sipping in the middle of uncertainty (10).

4- Fuel To Push Forward

It’s no secret that coffee holds a unique space in the hot beverage line up.

Sheldon Cooper knew it, so as a character who eschewed caffeine, he reserved coffee for hangover-esque situations alone.

So, in hard life seasons we may not instinctively equate caffeine with comfort, but there’s actually a component here that does fit such a season for some.

Due to its caffeine component, coffee can provide an energy boost (11).

And, in times where you simply must keep putting one foot in front of the other as you perhaps care for others or keep life going while it certainly feels as if it’s falling down around you, a boost of energy from a familiar source (coffee) could be beneficial for some.

Of course, we’re not at all insinuating that coffee should be used to power through as a means to ignore needed rest or time for your body to process difficulties, but it’s likely most of us have been through seasons of life where that morning cup (self-prepared or given by a friend who sees us in our trials) provided the push we needed to keep moving, keep caring, and push forward.

5- An Offer Of Connection

On the other side of difficult seasons in life are those friends, family members, and other loved ones who see you in your pain, who desire nothing more than for your difficult season to end, and for you to be comforted and cared for until that season resolves.

It’s normal to feel helpless in these times, as for all our wants and wishes, we often can not end another’s crisis through desire alone.

We can, however, offer comfort and provide needed connection through coffee.

In difficult circumstances, coffee is not only able to provide each of the qualities we’ve discussed in earlier points, but it can also offer quiet, gentle connection without overwhelming those who are already hurting or stressed (12).

A simple offer for a cup of coffee, whether hand-delivered, given as a gift card to a cafe, or offered as a sip to enjoy with a friend is simple enough to communicate care and allow for potentially needed connection without feeling the weight of added responsibilities or expectations such as having to put on a happy face through a long dinner or force conversation while potentially fighting back tears.

Instead, coffee has this unique quality of allowing sips to fill silence, warmth to be communicated without words, and care to be given through the simplicity of a common, familiar cup.

For those of you who may be in a hard season of life right now, we wish you nothing but warmth, familiarity, calm, and connection through a variety of caring means, including a comforting cup of coffee.

FAQ

1- How does Lifeboost communicate care through coffee when others are going through difficult seasons?

When it comes to communicating care to others through coffee, we’ve often sought to support our local first responders as they are commonly the hands and feet of care within any community.

If you’d like to read about our efforts in this regard, be sure to check out a few ways we’ve supported mothers, joined hands with local heroes, and more on the Lifeboost Blog.

2- How can I support a friend or loved one with coffee discreetly, offering care without interfering in the midst of a challenging season?

It’s likely that a friend or loved one wouldn’t view a sincere expression of care as an interference, but discretion is always a good rule of thumb in hard life seasons.

In this case, you could show you care through coffee in the following ways:

  • porch drop off (maybe a handwritten card and a bag of coffee)
  • a call/text and a cup (perhaps swinging by on your way to work with a hot cup in hand for a friend)
  • cafe invite (invite a loved one for a cup so they can take a small break in the midst of difficulty)

3- Other than community efforts, how does Lifeboost embody the common element of care associated with coffee?

Lifeboosters are familiar with our emphasis on care as a company as this is something we frequently highlight.

But, when it comes to those experiencing complex life situations, coffee farmers know a special aspect of hardship as this trade is often characterized by difficulty - physically and economically (13).

What good would our commitment to kindness be if we neglected this at the very source of our company?

So, to ensure our farmers’ lives are not ripe with difficulty due to their trade:

  • we pay a premium wage for their labors to ensure a steady, sustainable living income
  • we do not use chemicals in the coffee growing process, thereby protecting both our coffee farmers and the plants they grow/harvest
  • we incorporate ethical practices, including the prohibition of forced or child labor while also seeking to support our farmers and the communities they live in and enjoy
