Dark Roast Coffee Class Begins in 3, 2, 1…

Most of us recognize dark roasted coffee by its rich, bold aroma, deeply dark hue, and its intense, sometimes nutty, chocolatey, or even charred flavors.
This roast is commonly referred to as a French or Italian roast due to its characteristic full bodied, deep, smoky taste and near black appearance.
Lifeboost Dark Roast is similar, but this brew is what we’d also call a step-above when compared to a typical French or Italian roast.
Already a low acid brew, Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee brings a smoothness that our customers have long loved - a full-bodied brew, sometimes even described as having a heavier body, with a truly delicious aftertaste.
Dark roasts are able to yield these flavors due to hotter roasting temperatures and longer roasting times.
And, within this process coffee beans transform from evidenced flavors specific to growing regions to something deeper, something far darker (in a good way).
Dark roasts are achieved with great precision, quality, and balance, these unique tastes forming due to caramelization which occurs over time, under intense roasting heat.
If you’ve had a cup of dark roast which tasted bitter or burnt, it’s likely that these flavors occurred either due to an error in roasting or brewing, as a true, good dark roast isn’t burnt at all.
In fact, such a roast should allow you to savor rich, deep caramelized notes, with smokiness only coming through in vague hints.
The long roasting times and hot temps associated with dark roast coffee also serve to break down some of the acids in the beans, yielding a brew that’s noticeably less bitter, smoother, and even less acidic.
This is why many coffee lovers opt for dark roast, a brew that’s typically easier on digestion due to these characteristics which come about through the roasting process.
Upon first glance, you might notice a slight sheen on the surface of dark roasted coffee beans, something which occurs naturally through roasting as the cellular structure of the beans break down, causing the internal oils to migrate to the surface.
These oils actually contribute to the aroma of your brew and tastiness of your cup.
And, for Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee, since our coffee shrubs are grown at high elevations, this means our coffee beans are denser, a quality which allows the beans to withstand high levels of heat to yield a more flavorful cup.
So then, let’s transition now to take a look at some tasty ways to experience these delicious dark roast flavors…
Dark Roast Indulgences - Cold Brew, Lattes, Desserts, And More
1- He Likes It Cold…

Stranger Things brought us this iconic line, referencing the conditions needed for the darkness that is the Mind Flayer to ultimately thrive, but coffee lovers know the real OG of cold temp-ed darkness comes in a cup…a cup of cold brewed dark roast that is.
As we mentioned above, darker roasts are often loved for their smooth taste, but when you cold brew this fan favorite, it actually mellows even more.
Brewing with hot water draws out the acids and oils in coffee beans which give your brew its classic bitter taste, but in the case of cold brewing, this method (lacking heat) preserves those oils and acids within the beans, resulting in a smooth, low acid, and less bitter cup.
Of course, since Lifeboost Coffee is already a low acid brew, cold brewing our dark roast is purely chef’s kiss, yielding a bold, near chocolatey taste that’s out of this world!
And here, you’ll be amplifying those rich chocolate notes with the addition of homemade chocolate malt sauce…yum!
Ingredients
- 6 ounces cold brewed Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee
- 2 tablespoons chocolate malt sauce
- 4 ounces vanilla almond milk
- Ice
Instructions
- Add ice to a tall glass, then set aside.
- Add cold brew, malt sauce, almond milk, and ice to a shaker cup or cocktail shaker and shake until ingredients are fully incorporated. (5-10 seconds is usually enough)
- Pour shaken and irresistibly yummy coffee over ice in prepared glass and enjoy!
Homemade Chocolate Malt Sauce
- 1 ½ ounces semi-sweet chocolate
- 1-ounce bittersweet chocolate
- ½ cup heavy whipping cream
- ⅓ cup whole milk
- ⅓ cup malt powder
Roughly chop chocolate into pieces, then place in a heatproof bowl and set aside.
Add heavy cream, milk, and malt powder to a saucepan and heat over medium heat just until the mixture begins to boil. Stir continually as the mixture heats to avoid scorching the milk.
As soon as the mixture begins to boil, immediately pour over the chocolate.
Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes, then whisk until smooth.
Pour into a glass jar and allow the mixture to cool completely before covering and refrigerating. Can be stored for up to two weeks under refrigeration.
2- Some Like It Hot

We couldn’t deliver a dark and cold brew without providing an opposing (temp) cup as well.
While dark roasts commonly boast a rich and near chocolatey flavor, making sweet additions a prime companion, added spicy flavors, like cinnamon, pair well here too.
In the case of cinnamon, this spice serves to highlight any natural sweetness in your brew while also rounding out any bitterness.
When paired with a hot cup of joe, cinnamon also amplifies the coziness of your cup, each component enhancing the inherent warmth of the other.
In other words, cinnamon and dark roast coffee are like peas and carrots, a pair which brings out the best in each other.
And, that’s why we had to include this pair in our collection today…no, not peas and carrots, just bold and smooth dark roast coffee infused with flavors of sweet and spicy cinnamon.
Ingredients
- 4 ounces strongly brewed Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon dolce syrup (see recipe below)
- 4 ounces milk
- Whipped cream, for topping
- Ground cinnamon, for topping
Instructions
- Add milk to a small saucepan and heat over low heat just until warm.
- Add freshly brewed coffee to your favorite mug, then stir in cinnamon dolce syrup and warmed milk.
- Top with whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon and enjoy!
Homemade Cinnamon Dolce Syrup
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup filtered water
- 1 cup cane sugar
Add cinnamon sticks and water to a medium saucepan.
Bring to a boil, and allow the mixture to boil for 5 minutes.
Lower the heat and add sugar, stirring until dissolved.
Remove from heat, and strain out the cinnamon sticks.
Stir in vanilla extract, then allow the mixture to cool completely before transferring to a glass jar. Once cooled, seal and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
3- Dark Roast Dessert Pairings

This one’s a little outside the box as we’re not including a specific recipe here, but as we transition from dark drinks to desserts, we wanted to include a few pairing tips.
Who doesn’t love a rich, bold cup of dark roast alongside a sweet treat, right?
Well, like fine wine pairings, your dessert experience can also be enhanced by choosing an appropriate coffee roast to compliment your sweet indulgence.
And, when it comes to dark roast, your best option for choosing an appropriate companion is to opt for those tastes which mirror your brew.
For example, dark roasts are typically bold. And, in the case of Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee, you’ll most enjoy this selection’s deep and rich flavor, a balance of slight dryness and natural sweetness, commonly described as having chocolatey or near caramel-like notes due to the high roasting temps and longer roasting times (compared to lighter roasts).
Because of this, options such as rich, dark chocolate brownies or an indulgent chocolate lava cake make excellent dark roast accompaniments.
To bring out the slight caramel-like notes in dark roasted coffee, options like a rich and creamy flan also pair well.
Then, if you’re looking for desserts outside of the chocolate or caramel category, look for selections which match the richness of such a brew, items like decadent, creamy cheesecake or bold, coffee-infused tiramisu.
Is your mouth watering? Mine is!
So, what do you say we stop talking and start a little bit of brewing and baking?
4- Vietnamese Iced Coffee Cake

An incredibly delicious, decadent, coffee-infused beauty, that’s what this dark roast coffee infused dessert is, there’s just no other way to describe it!
Vietnamese coffee is made with strongly brewed coffee enhanced with sweetened condensed milk to bring both creaminess and rich sweetness to the brew.
Many enjoy this drink over ice, but I’m not gonna lie, incorporating these tastes into a dessert…I think that’s just plain genius!
Coffee flavored cake.
Sweetened condensed milk frosting.
Coffee fudge sauce topping.
Nothing…there’s really nothing else I can say, do, or add to this perfection confection!
Ingredients
For the coffee cake:
- 1 tablespoon ground Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee
- 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ¾ cup sugar
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup oil (recipe calls for canola oil, but I frequently use coconut oil in place of canola in baking)
- ¾ cup cold brewed Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee (bring to room temperature)
For the sweetened condensed milk frosting:
- 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- 4 ½ cups confectioner’s sugar
- 6 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
For the coffee fudge sauce:
- ¼ cup chocolate sauce
- 1 tablespoon cold brewed Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee (bring to room temperature)
Instructions
For the coffee cake:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit, then prepare your baking pans by generously spraying two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking spray. Line the bottom of each sprayed pan with parchment paper, then spray the parchment paper with cooking spray as well.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ground coffee, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, with a paddle attachment, combine sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Beat at medium speed until light, fluffy, and doubled in volume (roughly 3-4 minutes).
Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as necessary.
Turn the mixer speed to low, and slowly add sour cream, oil, and cold brewed coffee, beating until smooth (another 3-4 minutes).
Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture, mixing only until combined. Then, scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat on low for roughly 30 seconds.
Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans, then bake on the center oven rack for 30-35 minutes. The top of the cake should bounce back when gently pressed and a skewer inserted into the center should come out with only a few crumbs attached when the cake is finished baking.
Cool the cakes completely on a wire rack before frosting.
For the sweetened condensed milk frosting:

- In the bowl of a stand mixer, with the paddle attachment, beat butter, vanilla, and salt on medium-low speed until smooth and creamy. (roughly 1 minute)
- Reduce speed to low, then add confectioner’s sugar 1 cup at a time, beating until combined.
- Scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then turn the mixer on low again and slowly add the sweetened condensed milk, beating just until combined.
- Scrape the sides of the bowl with your spatula again, then beat on medium-high speed for approximately 2-3 minutes, until the frosting is smooth and creamy (use immediately).
- Assemble the cake, leveling the layers if needed. Then cover with the frosting, reserving ⅓ of the mixture for the coffee fudge swirls.
- While preparing the coffee fudge sauce, it is best to refrigerate the freshly frosted cake.
For the coffee fudge sauce:

- In a small bowl, whisk together the coffee and chocolate sauce until combined.
- Divide the reserved sweetened condensed milk frosting between two small bowls.
- In one bowl, use a rubber spatula to mix 1-2 teaspoons of coffee fudge sauce into the frosting. Mix until the color turns pale brown and the mixture is creamy.
- In the other bowl of reserved frosting, mix 1-2 tablespoons of coffee fudge sauce until the mixture is dark brown and creamy.
- To decorate the cake, add a teaspoon at a time of the coffee fudge mixtures along the border/edges of the top of the cake, rotating between the pale and dark brown colors created in the steps above.
- Once you have a border of ‘dollops’ of fudge sauce, use the spatula to swipe the dollops in a downward diagonal motion, rotating the cake as you work. Ultimately you’re trying to create a pattern that looks like slightly stirred/swirled creamy coffee.
- Smooth over any remaining dollops on top of the cake, then use the remaining coffee fudge sauce in the bowls to completely cover the top of the cake, smoothing it into the existing frosting.
- Serve immediately, then store the remaining cake at room temperature for roughly a day, or store in the refrigerator if you have any remaining after a day.
5- Beyond The Brew

Coffee isn’t just a breakfast brew anymore…I mean, it hasn’t been for some time now, but we’re not just talking mugs, cups, and cakes now.
Did you know dark roasted coffees also enhance the flavor of many types of meat?
When using ground coffee in a rub, the acids and enzymes serve to break down muscle fibers and connective tissues in meat, working as a natural tenderizer.
The addition of coffee also enhances the texture of meat, and its bold flavors easily ‘hold their own’ up against a variety of spices, adding depth and complexity while also providing a smoky, robust flavor.
This sweet and smoky rub incorporates both the bold, rich flavors of dark roast coffee with notes of heat from black pepper, chili powder, and cayenne, while finishing it all off with a subtle, smoky sweetness from the addition of brown sugar.
Use it on beef, pork, or even chicken for a delicious grill mate!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons ground Lifeboost Dark Roast Coffee
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon cracked black pepper
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
- Use immediately, rubbing the mixture gently into the surface of your choice of meat (brisket, steak, pork tenderloin, pork chops, chicken, burger mixture).
- Store any excess in an airtight container.
**If using with beef or pork, you can apply the spice rub and allow the meat to marinate in the refrigerator overnight before using. When using with chicken, it is recommended to only marinate for a few hours or to use/cook immediately.
