Moses Wamutanga has been a coffee farmer in Uganda for years. With 8 children to provide for, he’s always had to work hard.
Moses would manage, harvest, process, and wash his trees, doing a 10-person job all by himself. He rode on his motorbike for hours – dozens of miles back and forth on dirt roads – working like crazy to support his family.
But despite his high-quality product and insane work ethic, the industry had other plans. His coffee would get mixed into a regional lot and Moses would be paid based on what the regional lot could sell, undercutting the value of his coffee.
He was unable to advocate for himself! He knew his coffee was worth so much more, but he kept getting the short end of the stick.
In 2018, he and several other top farmers began working as a collective. They standardized their farming and picking practices. And they learned how to better sort and process coffee at a new centralized Kyombe Washing Station in Manafwa - located in the foothills of Mt. Elgon.
Moses was the first to deliver to their new washing station, only 8km from his home. Even better, the 2,000 farmers who share this station get paid a fair price immediately upon delivery!
This is now a breath of fresh air for Moses, knowing he can finally support his family without overworking himself.
With only 800 coffee plants, small farms of 0.2 hectares (That’s ½ of a football field) and an annual production of 1,000kg of exportable coffee, farmers like Moses used to struggle to make enough, especially competing with the Kenyan farmers close by.

Sun-Dried
Once washed, the beans are sun-dried until they've achieved a moisture content of 11.5%. (Too much moisture and you risk mold; too dry and the flavor of the coffee is spoiled.) Finally, the beans transition to a 30-day "rest" period which allows the flavor profile of our beans to deepen in richness, complexity and taste.

By employing sustainable farming methods, the fairly traded coffee is grown by farmers who are paid a fair wage for doing so.
